Shopify Product Quiz Guide 2023

A product recommendation tool is like your best sales agent on auto pilot—guiding your buyers through the sales process, asking the right questions and recommending the best options—always on brand, always helpful and more importantly, always on. The data shows these tools increase engagement, conversion and sales. If you’ve considered this strategy in the past but never got to implementing it or you’ve tried it but didn’t get the desired results, now’s the perfect time to get back into it. Read this step-by-step guide to get started.

In this article, we'll go over:

How to Create a Shopify Quiz with No Code

There are different ways to approach the creation of a recommendation quiz. Here’s the list our team uses when working with our clients. You might be tempted to skip a few steps, but based on our experience, these are all important, don’t skip steps.

1. Define your objectives

Start by clearly outlining your objectives for your quiz. Are you looking to increase sales, collect emails, or simplify the discovery process for your buyers? This will set the foundation and help you prioritize and make better content and design decisions. Download the free template here.

Example: You’re the marketing manager of an online apparel shop. Your objective is to increase sales by 15% in Q1. You have a social media campaign set up and would like to add a quiz.

2. Add questions

Shopify Product Quiz Questions

From our experience and research, we’ve found that the ideal number of questions for a product quiz is somewhere between 5 and 7 questions max. Keep it short but not too short. You’ll have to test and iterate on the number of questions that drive the highest conversion for your specific use case.

Example: If we continue with our fictional apparel shop, we could ask ourselves the following questions. Preferred style (e.g. sneakers, boots, sandals), type of t-shirt (e.g. casual, athletic, dressy), fit for t-shirts (e.g. loose, fitted, oversized), colour palette (e.g. neutral, bold, pastel), material (e.g. cotton, polyester, linen), price range (e.g. under $20, $20-$50, over $50).

3. Add images and icons

Images and icons add more life to your quiz. They also make it easier to understand the different options by having a visual that supports the text. We recommend the following sites for finding images:

  • Unsplash.com (free images)

  • Heroicons.dev (free icons)

  • Elements.envato.com (free and paid images)

  • Figma community (free icons and vectors)

Example: For our type of t-shirt question, we could add some lifestyle images portraying the style (e.g. casual, athletic, dressy). Similarly, we could add some icons showcasing the different fit for t-shirts (e.g. loose, fitted, oversized).

4. Set up your branding

Having the same look and feel for your quiz as the rest of your site is essential to create a seamless experience. Select your font, background color, accent color. Bonus: you can even add a background image that fades in nicely with the color background for an improved on-brand look and feel.

Example: We’ll select our brand colors and a faded background image of your store.

5. Set your unique product attributes

When you create your quiz on Motixo, you can define and link new attributes to your products. When visitors finish the quiz, they will be shown the products that match with their selected attributes. Think of behavioral and situational questions that will help you better understand your customer’s needs and link these with your product recommendations.

Example: We’ll set the following attributes for our t-shirts: style (e.g. casual, athletic, dressy), fit for t-shirts (e.g. loose, fitted, oversized), colour palette (e.g. neutral, bold, pastel), material (e.g. cotton, polyester, linen), etc.

6. Add an email capture form

Shopify Product Quiz Lead Capture Form

Make sure you add a lead capture form. Keep it simple and add incentives like discounts and promotions for signing up. This marketing expense will be worth it since the user has already reached the end of the quiz and is clearly interested enough in your products and solutions to stick around. Your buyers will also feel more inclined to make a purchase thanks to this positive reinforcement.

Example: We’ll give users a 10% discount when they sign up through the quiz.

7. Embed your product recommendation quiz

Embed a Product Quiz on Shopify

Once you’re ready to publish your quiz on your Shopify store, you can simply copy the code and paste it in an HTML lock on your landing page. We recommend adding a link to your landing page in the nav bar or your footer, for easy access. Otherwise, you will miss out on all the organic traffic you could engage with your product quiz.

Example: We’ll create a landing page and add it in our main menu (Take Quiz). Our landing page has a title “Find Your Perfect Fit” and our embedded quiz.

Here are 5 key advantages you’re missing out on if you’re not using an embedded product recommendation quiz for your Shopify store:

Product recommendation quizzes are interactive and fun, which makes them an engaging way for your customers to discover new products. This can help keep customers on your site for longer and increase their overall engagement with your brand.

By providing your customers with personalized product recommendations, you can help them find the products that are most relevant to their interests and needs. This can improve their shopping experience and increase their satisfaction with your brand.

How to Find the Best Shopify Quiz App

There are many Shopify apps available to create your product recommendation quiz and it can be a daunting task figuring out which one to pick. We’ve compiled a list of important factors to consider when comparing among product recommendation quiz tools. Start by weighing the pros and cons for each of these features based on how they align with your business objectives.help you better understand your customer base and tailor your marketing efforts to their needs.

1. Simplicity and speed

In general, your marketing manager should be able to create the quiz and publish it on your live website without any developer support. If you depend on IT, your iterations will be much slower. The same goes for updates, e.g. typos, rewording, etc.

2. Multi language

Depending on your audience and where your store is located, you’ll want to translate the quiz in more than one language/currency. The RecoQuiz supports multiple languages so you can focus on growing your sales.

3. Full brand customization

It’s imperative for brands to customize the look and feel of the quiz experience. You want your quiz to feel like it’s part of your website, not just another annoying widget that distracts your visitors.

4. Actionable analytics and insights

Insights are one of the most important elements when considering a quiz tool. At the minimum, you need to see where your visitors are dropping off, so you can fix it and improve conversion. You need to have a custom time period selection, …

5. Integrations

The most time consuming aspect of collecting emails is the process of copy pasting them from one place to the next. Ideally, you can automate this task and have leads synced directly to your CRM.

6. Flexible custom attributes

There are many instances where your Shopify product attributes are lacking when it comes to behavioral and contextual data. Your marketing manager might want to have more insights on your customers’ shopping habits and interests but maintaining attributes for a specific campaign is a hard sell. With the RecoQuiz, this is no longer a problem. You can simply map new attributes for each product and edit them as you go.

7. UI and customer experience

These days, UI standards have never been higher. Whether you like it or not, your visitors are comparing your online presence with other stores on their favorite apps like Instagram, TikTok, etc. That means a great user interface and customer experience are no longer optional—they’re mandatory. This includes seamless animations and interactions, responsive and sleek UI and of course, this goes without saying, staying on brand.

By providing personalized product recommendations, these quizzes help your Shopify store stand out in a crowded online marketplace and encourage customers to make a purchase.

Overall, a product recommendation quiz is an indispensable tool for your Shopify store in a challenging economic climate, as it can help you attract and retain customers, boost sales and improve your direct mail conversions. It ultimately comes down to these three main points and a Shopify quiz checks all the boxes:

  1. Simplify the buyer experience

  2. Keep your buyers engaged
